Pilates

At Peak Performance our goal is to help you be your best.  Whether you have recurring injuries or chronic pain, low back or neck pain, a past injury that you never quite recovered from, if you are looking to improve posture or flexibility, or improve sports performance, Clinical Pilates can help you get the results you want.

Clinical Pilates

Clinical Pilates was developed by Physiotherapists and combines the original work of Joseph Pilates with recent scientific spinal stability research.   Pilates has evolved for rehabilitation of sports and spinal injuries, and to enhance athletic performance.

One thing that is very common with injuries, especially spinal pain, is poor motor activation patterns. When motor activation is not ideal, muscles don’t switch on in the right sequence, or in the right proportion. Some muscles may be over-active, and others not active enough which causes imbalance, compensation and an increase in strain on your system.

Exercises performed with spring loaded equipment rather than free weights allow you to work on muscle control rather than strength, and work muscle groups in functional motor patterns. The result is a body that works more efficiently, supports your spine throughout each movement, ensures your muscular system is in balance, and reduces strain and pain related to musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Pilates targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture.  Focusing on correct postural alignment during specific exercises and maintaining a specific pattern of breathing allows the stabilizing muscles of the abdomen and low back to protect the spine from injury whilst gaining a whole body workout.
